HASS

The Western Australian Curriculum: Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) has two interrelated strands: Knowledge and Understanding, and Humanities and Social Sciences Skills.

Together, these strands provide students with the knowledge, understanding and skills to investigate the world around them, explore how people interact with places and environments, understand how societies have changed over time, and participate as informed and active citizens.

The Western Australian Curriculum: Humanities and Social Sciences aims to ensure that students develop:

• a sense of wonder, curiosity and respect about places, people, cultures, events, ideas and environments throughout the world
• an understanding of how individuals and groups have shaped societies and how societies continue to change over time
• knowledge and understanding of historical, geographical, civic and economic concepts that help explain the world in which they live
• an understanding of Australia's democratic system and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship
• an understanding of how people make decisions about resources, participate in economic life and contribute to the wellbeing of communities
• the ability to think critically, solve problems, make informed decisions and respond effectively to local, national and global issues
• the skills to investigate, collect, analyse and evaluate information from a range of sources and perspectives
• the ability to communicate ideas, findings and conclusions effectively using appropriate subject-specific language and conventions
• an appreciation of diversity and the interconnectedness of people, places, environments and economies
• the capacity to become active, informed and responsible citizens who contribute positively to their communities.

At Wattle Grove, Humanities and Social Sciences provides students with opportunities to explore the past, understand the present and prepare for the future.

Through the study of History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship, and Economics and Business, students develop an understanding of the world and their place within it. They learn about significant people, events and developments, investigate places and environments, examine how communities and governments function, and explore how resources are managed to meet needs and wants.

Through inquiry, discussion, research, problem-solving and real-world investigations, students at Wattle Grove develop the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to participate confidently and responsibly in an increasingly interconnected world. HASS encourages students to think critically, consider different perspectives, make informed decisions and become active contributors to their school, community and society.
